December 23rd A Gift For Jesus?

Matthew 2:10-11

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

The “they” in today’s scripture were the wise men. Some say they smelled like smoke cause they came from “afar”. These wise men came from the east seeking the one born King of the Jews. Wise men still seek Jesus today. These came looking to worship Him and give him gifts.

We find the gifts very appropriate for who Jesus was, is and will be in the future. Jesus had come as The Prophet (Deuteronomy 18:15-18) to teach us about the Father and proclaim the liberty found in the the kingdom of God. Prophets were anointed with myrrh.

Today we find Jesus serving as our Great High Preist at the Father’s right hand. Hebrews tells us that “he ever liveth to make intercession for the saints.“ The High priest in the temple offered frankincense on the altar of incense while making intercessory prayer for all the people.

When Jesus returns to earth he will not come as a lamb that takes away the sins of the world. No. He will come as the King of all Kings when he returns with his bride to setup the kingdom of heavens rule on the earth. The gift of gold is fit for a King. Gold represents the glory and majesty of our King. Jesus is worthy of the gifts they offered.

We give gifts this time of year to those we love symbolizing the greatest gift ever given to mankind - God’s own son. We are supposed to love Jesus more than anyone. I think that qualifies him as worthy of getting a gift from you and me. What would you give Jesus as a gift? What does He want? Think about it.

So glad Jesus is our Prophet, Priest, and King!
