December 8th Following Jesus

Matthew 8:23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.

24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.

26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

As we follow Jesus we often don’t know what to expect. He knows the future but we don’t. We must have faith that the one who holds the future has a great plan for us. Here are some things we learn to expect when following Jesus:

Expect Storms: They followed Jesus into the ship and right into a storm. He had planned the storm. We see in other passages where Jesus sends his own right into the storm. He promises storms. He said ”in this world ye shall have tribulations, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” So we can expect storms. But he has a purpose for them.

Expect a Bigger Faith: He uses the storms to take us from one level of faith to another. He doesn’t desire followers of little faith. He doesn’t want us to be fearful. In fact “he has not given us the spirit of fear, bot of power, and love and of a sound mind.” (I Timothy 1:7) He will use the storms to build powerful faith. He won’t leave us in the storm one second longer than we need to grow bigger faith.

Expect a Great Calm: After the storm has been hushed expect a peace that passes understanding. He brings a calmness into our life that nothing else in the universe can give. We then know everything will always be okay. We know He is sovereign over all things. His plan is best.

Expect to be Marvelled: Oh what a Savior we follow. We will see things that those who don’t follow Jesus will never see. When we are watching we will be amazed at the great things He has done and will do to give us joy and excitement. What a blessing it is to follow the Savior of the world!
