January 20th How Shall They Know?

John 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Jesus is at his last supper table. In the morning He would pay the ultimate sacrifice, demonstrating His great love for mankind. (John 15:13) He wants to ensure his disciples got the point of their three and a half journey together. All they had witnessed, all they had learned, and all His teachings came down to one point: Love!

So Jesus states it straight and to the point, I’m giving you a commandment now - Love one another! Jesus then says “if you love me you will keep my commandments”, about 10 times in chapters 14 and 15. And not only did he give the command to love but he stated the kind of love. “As I have loved you” kinda love. That’s not small love. That is Extreme Love.

Jesus spent the previous part of this chapter washing their dirty feet. He not only loved them inside but He did things which demonstrated that love on the outside. He gave them and us a great example. True love has a way of turning into actions. What actions can we put into to place to show more love?

Lastly, He said our extreme love put into actions towards one another would accomplish something in this world. It would let all the world know that we are Jesus disciples. By having this great love one for another, somehow demonstrated, all people will know we belong to Jesus. The question is how will we show our love in action?
