March 25 Running Our Obstacle Course

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Our verses liken our lives to a race that’s being run. The stands are full of witnesses and we are all geared up to run life’s Race which our Father has given us. As we run our race we notice that the race is not a fast, straight, short, sprint.

Our race is more is more like an obstacle course. Why? Because their are those who don’t want us to finish the race, much less be a winner. Satan and the world put obstacles out there in our path. We are like magnets and the weights in our way seem to cling to us like magnets to metal. Next thing we know, we are trying to run but we are weighted down by the weights we are carrying.

Weights like constant temptations, false feelings of guilt, selfishness and shame are slowing us down. We try to go around or over them but when we get to close and boom - we’re stuck. No runner can run very well carrying an anvil.

Then there is always sin that so easily besets us. Sin brings our soul to a crawl - not a run. We can’t win a race crawling on our hands and knees.

Then there is the great news about our race! First, we can lay aside every weight. We don’t have to carry it. We can lay aside the sin that so easily besets us. (Doubt) We can run free and fast. Secondly we don’t have to win. Jesus has already ran our race and won prize of eternal life!!!

How do we lay aside all and run? Look to Jesus!! Focus on Him. He’s the finisher. He will help us run. Put our eyes straight upon our Savior and don’t look anywhere else. He’s standing at the finish line cheering us on. We need to put our faith in what he endured for us and run only to please Jesus. He has won the prize for us!
